‎"Notem que os clássicos sempre refizeram o mesmo quadro, e sempre de maneira diferente. A partir de um determinado momento, Cézanne sempre pintou a mesma tela, as Banhistas. Se bem que o mestre de Aix tenha refeito o mesmo quadro sem parar, não vamos conhecer um novo Cézanne sem a maior curiosidade. A esse propósito admiro-me realmente que possamos perguntar se a lição do pintor da Casa do Enforcado e dos Jogadores de Cartas seja boa ou nociva. Se vocês soubessem quanta força moral, quanta coragem me deu durante a vida todo o seu exemplo maravilhoso... Nas horas de dúvida, quando ainda estava me procurando, às vezes assustado pelas minhas descobertas, pensava: “Se Cézanne está certo, também estou” - e eu sabia que Cézanne não havia se enganado. Sabem, na obra de Cézanne há leis arquitetônicas muito úteis para um jovem pintor. Entre os maiores méritos, ele teve o de querer que em um quadro os tons fossem forças, dando à sua tarefa de pintor a mais alta missão. Não se deve admirar que Cézanne tenha hesitado tanto tempo e tão repetidamente. A meu ver, cada vez que estou diante da tela, parece que estou pintando pela primeira vez. Em Cézanne havia muitas possibilidades de precisar, mais do que ninguém, de colocar em ordem o seu cérebro. Cézanne é realmente uma espécie de Pai eterno da pintura. Cézanne é o mestre de todos nós. Perigosa a sua influência? E se fosse? Muito pior para quem não tem força suficiente para sustentá-la!"
